DECOMPOSING BODIES OF TWO UNIZIK STUDENTS FOUND IN HOSTEL
REPORTER: UCHE NDEKE
Two persons suspected to be students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State have been found dead in a private hostel room close to the institution.
The male and female bodies were found on Sunday afternoon after the door to the room, said to belong to the girl, was broken by neighbours.
When Radio Nigeria visited the Williams Hostel, a student, who did not want her name mentioned, said the bodies, which were already decomposing, were seen after a lady raised the alarm.
According to her, the woman believed to be a relation of the deceased girl, had been calling her cellular phone without any success before she decided to visit the hostel to ascertain why she was not answering her calls.
On getting to the ground floor room of the two storey hostel, she noticed the phone was ringing inside the room.
The development made her to shout and beckoned on neighbors and security men, who helped to force the door open.
The eye witness, who said she lived upstairs, however, confirmed that she had been perceiving a stench for few days but did not know where it was come from.
Other residents of the area said the girl was a student of the University but that they could not ascertain the identity of the male partner.
In an interview, the Chief Security Officer of the Institution, Chief Ken Chukwurah, confirmed that the female victim was a one hundred level student of the school while the identity of the male victim was not yet established.
Chief Chukuwurah, however, noted that investigation was still on going to know the cause of the incident, which he described as unfortunate.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Mr. Tochukwu Ikenga, said the students might have died from inhalation of carbon monoxide from generator fumes but noted that the result of the autopsy would confirm the actual cause of the death.
Mr. Ikenga said the generator was found in a place facing the room, which was on the down floor of the building.
Though academic activities had been paralyzed following the one month warning strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), some students were seen within and outside the school hostels, including the building where the said incident occurred.
