The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Abia State wing has suspended its strike.
The suspension followed agreements reached between the national leadership of NUT and the Abia State Government over arrears of salaries owed teachers.
Speaking with Radio Nigeria in Umuahia after meeting with the government, the state Chairman NUT, Comrade Kizito Kalu, said that government had agreed to liquidate all the outstanding arrears of salaries owed both senior and junior secondary school teachers in the state before the end of 2021.
According to Comrade Kalu, government has also agreed to pay the basic school teachers the ten thousand naira added to salaries of all workers in the state.
He noted that government had equally directed that check-off dues and teachers’ retirement contributions be paid along with every salary payment of teachers.
Comrade Kalu therefore directed teachers in the state to go back to their classes from Wednesday March 3, 2021.
He commended both the state Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu and the National leadership of the NUT for their intervention in the matter.
