IPPIS ENROLLMENT CONTROVERSY: ASUU OWERRI ZONE DEMANDS VISITATION PANEL TO UNIVERSITIES

The Academic Staff Union of Universities Owerri Zonal Chapter has called on Nigerians to prevail on the Federal Government to rescind its decision to enroll universities into the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) to guarantee industrial peace.

The Coordinator of the Zone, which comprises universities in Imo, Anambra and Abia States, Comrade Uzo Onyebinama, made the appeal during a news conference in Owerri.

Comrade Onyebinama said the policy was in conflict with university autonomy and other agreements entered into with the government.

He noted that university system had its peculiarities, hence could not be subjected to civil service bureaucracy.

He also appealed to the government to commence the process of re-negotiating the 2009 Federal Government and ASUU agreement to address emerging issues bothering on funding and condition of service.

Comrade Onyebinama also called on the Federal Government to constitute visitation panel to universities, which he said was due since 2016 to enable the government to probe the conduct of the affairs of the universities.
