ENUGU STATE ASSEMBLY VOWS TO USE ALL LEGISLATIVE FRAMEWORK TO ADDRESS INSECURITY

The Enugu State House of Assembly says it will explore all legislative frame work in addressing the rising cases of insecurity in the State.

This followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance on the need to encourage Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi not to relent in his efforts to win the war against the rising cases of insecurity in the State sponsored by the member representing Ezeagu State Constituency, Comrade Chima Obieze.

The House which was on vacation had to reconvene as part of its solidarity to the State Governor in view of the rising incidents of insecurity.

The State for sometime now has been witnessing unprecedented rise of heinous crimes which include kidnapping, murder, armed robbery, farmers and herders clashes.

The Assembly in a resolution commended the efforts of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in tackling the problem and implementing the decision of the State Security Council.

Part of the Council’s resolution include overhauling of the State Neighbourhood Watch Groups and engaging one thousand, seven hundred guards as well as deploying them to all Local Government Areas in the State.

Presenting the motion, Mr. Chima Obieze said as representatives of the people, it was the duty of the House to let the people know that help had already been provided.

The Speaker of the House, Chief Edward Ubosi explained that the House would fast track passage of bills aimed at putting to an end farmers-herders’ crisis in the State.

Contributing to the motion, the member representing Nsukka East, Chief Chinedu Nwamba, Mr. Iloabuchi Aniagu, Nkanu West and Prince Ezenta Ezeani Igbo-Etiti East decried failure by the constitution to give Governors power over security agencies.

The House Committee Chairman on Information and Communication, Mr. Jeff Mba said there was need to seek for new approach in stemming the security challenges facing the area.

Mr. Mba expressed the commitment of the Assembly to providing legislative backing to the Governor’s plan to reposition security architecture of the State.
