REPORTER: AMECHI ODO

Police in Ebonyi State have confirmed an attack on a military checkpoint along the ever-busy Amangwu axis of the Amasiri-Owutu federal road in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Mr. Joshua Ukandu, told journalists that some hoodlums attacked the military checkpoint in the early hours of Friday with sophisticated weapons.

He said that though it was not yet clear if there were casualties, the attack was carried out by yet to be identified gunmen operating with motorcycle.

Meanwhile, a community source, who spoke on grounds of anonymity, pointed out that a soldier was killed while one of the gunmen was also killed by the soldiers during the attack.

Radio Nigeria gathered that the attack caused panic and apprehension in the area as motorists and commuters plying the federal road had to spend hours to ensure that normalcy had returned to the area before proceeding to their destinations.
