REPORTER: AMECHI ODO

University workers under the aegis of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non Academic Union of Allied and Education Institutions (NASU) in Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ikwo (AE-FUNAI), Ebonyi State have held a protest march to demand the immediate payment of their four months withheld salaries by the Federal Government.

The workers who were carrying placards with various inscriptions marched from the Needs Assessment Building to the Campus Gate before terminating at the Administrative Block.

Addressing newsmen, the Chairman of SSANU, Comrade Onyebuchi Mpamugo wondered why the Federal government had refused to release the withheld salaries even when President Bola Tinubu had given approval that the salaries be paid.

The Chairman of NASU, Comrade Chibuike Igwe explained that the Unions would picket both the Ministry of Education and other concerned government agencies in Abuja if the withheld salaries were not released by Thursday this week.

The Chairman Nigeria Labour Congress in the State, Professor Ogugua Egwu who later joined the protest described the action of the government as inhuman pointing out that it was a violation of the non victimization clause signed by the Unions to end the 2022 University Workers strike in Nigeria.
