REPORTER: OBY ARINZE

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Anambra Sector Command, has deployed 1,020 personnel for its Eid-El-Kabir Special Patrol.

The Sector Commander, Mr. Adeoye Irelewuyi, who stated this during a press briefing explained that it was to ensure free flow of traffic.

Mr. Irelewuyi said the deployed personnel, made up of both regular and special marshals, would man the identified flash points across the state.

According to the Sector Commander, some of the flash points are the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, the Old Awka-Onitsha Road and Upper Iweka.

Mr. Irelewuyi pointed out that the corps had also deployed its men to the Aguata axis for vehicles moving towards Imo and other parts of the South East.

The Sector Commander noted that reflective jackets, traffic cones, tyre pressure gauges, a number of extricating machines and digital breathalyzers were part of the tools set aside for the special patrol operation.

He said the corps introduced some key safety initiatives to tackle ugly behaviours, including the use of trailers to convey passengers, night trips, fatigue, speed violations, driving under influence of substances as well as overloading of vehicles.

This, he observed, was in line with the Corps Marshal’s, Shehu Mohammed’s, Eid-el-Kabir Special Patrol directive.

“The Corps Marshal said in order to reduce all these challenges , the Corps introduced some key safety initiatives in collaboration with Nigerian Bar Association and state Judiciaries for timely prosecution of drivers and vehicle owners caught contravening established traffic regulations.

“Mr. Mohammed explained that in order to fight the menace of conveying humans, goods and animals in the same truck, FRSC flagged off the Inter-Agency Joint Task Force in March 23rd, 2024 to enforce compliance.

“The special operations, the Corps Marshal noted are targeted at achieving reduction in road traffic crashes, road traffic injuries, prompt response to road traffic crash victims, speedy removal of obstructions on the highways among others,” he said.

The Anambra State Sector Commander further noted that the FRSC would mount aggressive sensitization for all road users, especially at drivers’ loading bays to educate them about the dangers of contravening traffic rules.

Mr. Irelewuyi added that “to achieve this, the corps will engage the motoring public through purposeful and impactful public education programmes.

“The objectives of the special operations are to achieve reduction in road traffic crashes, road traffic fatalities, prompt response to road traffic crash victims among others.”
