REPORTER: AMECHI ODO

Ebonyi State Government has set up a five man Special Committee to investigate the cause of the collapse of a two storey building under construction adjacent Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki.

Inaugurating the Committee in Abakaliki, the Commissioner for Capital City and Urban Development, Mr. Sunday Inyima, emphasized that the state government was determined to identify factors responsible for the collapse of the building with a view to forestalling a recurrence.

The Commissioner said the term of reference for the Committee was to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the collapse of the building and gave the Committee two weeks within which to submit its report.

The Chairman of the Committee, who is also the State Chairman Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, (COREN), Mr. Enyinnaya Eni, said no stone would be left unturned to identify the cause of the collapse.

He commended the State Government for being proactive towards investigating the unfortunate incident and promised that the Committee would justify the confidence reposed in it.

Radio Nigeria gathered that the collapsed building which belonged to a State Lawmaker representing Afikpo North Eest, Mr. Oluchukwu Ukiezeali, was allegedly not approved by the Ministry of Capital City and Urban Development as he was instructed not to build on the site.
