REPORTER: LAWRENCE NWOKEDI

The Nigeria Labour congress (NLC) Abia State has joined its counterparts nationwide to staged a peaceful protest in support of Academics Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over Federal Government’s failure to fulfill its agreement with the union.

Addressing journalists, the Chairman, NLC Abia State, Comrade Uchenna Obigwe, explained that the labour was in support ASUU strike nationwide and called on Federal Government to do the needful by meeting the demands of the university lecturers.

Also, the first Vice Chairman of the Congress in Abia State, Comrade Hope Ekwuribe, expressed concern over federal government’s failure to address the demands of the ASUU, stating that the strike had paralyzed academic activities in the last five months in government owned universities in country.

He noted that the organised labour decided to embark on the peaceful protest following directives from the Natioal leadership of the Congress in Abuja.

Radio Nigeria observed that members of Congress marched along some major roads in Umuahia, carrying placards with various inscriptions, including “Government save Public Education from collapsing,” “FGN honour your agreement with University unions,” “Our children are tired of staying at home” and “No Education, no Nation.”
