ANAMBRA ASSEMBLY OKAYS 5TH CONSTITUTION AMENDMENT

REPORTER: UCHE NDEKE

The Anambra State House of Assembly has approved the fifth amendment to the 1999 constitution as transmitted to it by the National Assembly.

The law makers in a resolution shortly after returning from the committee of the whole, adopted and passed all the 66 alterations for the amendment of the constitution.

The National Assembly had set up a committee that looked into the 1999 constitution as amended and came up with 66 alterations, which the Senate and the House of Representatives had done justice to.

However, according to the Majority Leader, Dr. Nnamdi Okafor, the alterations made by the National Assembly would not become a law until it enjoyed concurrence from two third of the 36 state houses of assembly.

The Speaker, Mr. Uche Okafor, who presided over the plenary, explained that with their approval, the lawmakers agreed that the fifth alteration bill becomes part of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Part of the approved alterations is a Bill seeking to alter the Constitution to allow for an independent candidate during electoral contest and a bill that seeks to alter the provisions of the Constitution to provide a timeframe within which the President or a Governor shall forward to the Senate or State House of Assembly names of nominees for confirmation as Ministers or commissioners.
