ABIA LG POLL: LP MEMBERS AGAINST IMPOSITION OF CANDIDATES

REPORTER: PEACE AGBO

Some members of the labour party from Aba North have staged a peaceful protest at the government House Umuahia over alleged imposition of candidates in the forthcoming local government election in Abia State.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, an ex officio one in Aba North Ward 7, Mr. Peters Onwumere and the party’s Legal Adviser in the LGA, Mr. Ezenwa Munaonyeso, said they staged the protest to voice their dissatisfaction and demand accountability from electoral authorities.

They appealed to Governor Alex Otti to allow them to exercise their rights of democracy by electing people they know.

The protesters, who carried placards with inscriptions — “Iheke is not a registered party member, we don’t want Iheke as chairman of Aba north LGA,” “Stop imposition of councilors and chairman in Aba north LGA,” among others, lamented that they had not benefitted from the various grants and palliatives in the past months by the state government as the ruling party.

Addressing the Protesters, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr.Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, promised to tender their grievances to the Governor for required response.

The protest is an indication of discrepancies in the party as members had gathered at the party’s secretariat for the purchase of forms for the November 2nd local government election without the chairman of the party, Mr. Emmanuel Ot, appearing in the office as the time of this report.
