SUPPORT RURAL WOMEN IN THEIR LAUDABLE CONTRIBUTION TO COMMUNITY DEVPT — ABIA WOMAN LEADER CALLS

The need to create the enabling environment for women in rural areas to realiz their full potential has been emphasized.

A woman leader in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State, Mrs. Phina Kanu, made the call while speaking with Radio Nigeria on the 2024 International Day of Rural Women which is marked on the 15th of October annually.

Mrs. Kanu said Nigerian women, who live in rural areas, were playing a crucial part in moving their communities forward by engaging in many laudable activities such as farming, trading, construction of halls and raising their children to be responsible members of the society.

Mrs. Kanu, however, listed lack of quality healthcare services, poverty and bad roads, which make farming and evacuation of produce difficult, as some factors that posed a great challenge to women in rural areas.

The woman leader called for provision of quality healthcare services in the rural areas, facilities for evening education, provision and training on how to use modern equipment for farming, supply of fertilizer and other farm inputs as well as repair of rural roads to aid agricultural activities and make life easier for rural women.

Theme of this year’s event is “Empowering Women Living in Rural Areas through Education and Access to Technology: Bridging the Gap for Inclusive and Sustainable Agri-Food Systems in Africa.”
