LP SOUTH EAST HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY CAUCUS DEMANDS RELEASE OF NNAMDI KANU, FINANCIAL AUTONOMY OF STATE LEGISLATURE

REPORTER: KEVIN EKEDIEGWU

The South East House of Assembly caucus of the Labour Party (LP) has appealled to President Bola Tinubu to release the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, from detention.

In a communique by the Leader of the Caucus, Mr. Jude Umennajiego, Mazi Kanu’s release will douse the current tension creating insecurity in the zone.

The communique observes that insecurity has grounded the economy of the region and occasioned unprecedented loss of human lives as well as destruction of property.

It says the release will act as a healing balm to the region and also encourage the feeling of oneness as a nation.

The communique further points out that his release will separate genuine agitators from criminals in the business of kidnapping.

It also expresses its gratitude to the Southeast Governors, Senators and House of Representatives members for their recent resolve to interface with the Federal Government for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from detention.

It, however, appeals to the Governors of South East region and the whole nation to work to grant full financial autonomy to the state Houses of Assembly in accordance with the constitution and the Principles of Separation of Powers.

The communique pleads with the Federal Government to ensure the quick resolution of the current minimum wage impasse between the government and the organised labour, stressing that the current economic reality and astronomical increment in the prices of goods and services have brought untold hardship to the people.

The communique also appeals to the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly to ensure, as a matter of urgency, that in accordance with the standing order of the House, the minority positions due to the Labour Party members are given to them without further delay.
