BAN ALMAJIRI, OVERHAUL SECURITY, CONSIDER VIEWS OF CITIZENS ON RUGA SETTLEMENT: ANGLICAN CHURCH TELLS FG

The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Enugu Province, is worried about the rising cases of suicide among youths and growing number of street children.
The Archbishop of the Province, the Most Reverend Emmanuel Chukwuma, made the church’s position known in a thanksgiving service to mark the 17TH Synod of the Diocese of Enugu at Ebenezer Anglican Parish Independence Layout Phase-2.
Archbishop Chukwuma urged the government to take adequate measures to care for the needs of the citizens and also to initiate the process of banning Almajiri system in the north.
He condemned the worsening state of insecurity in the country and advised the Federal Government to overhaul the security apparatus to reflect current realities.
The Most Reverend Chukwuma also advised the Federal Government to consider the views of the citizens on the proposed plan to establish Ruga Farm Settlement in some parts of the country and ensure that its implementation would not affect the already fragile security situation.
Speaking on the theme of the Synod “Beware of the Little Foxes: a Warning to the Present Day Christians,” the Anglican Bishop of Ajayi Crowther Diocese in Ogun State, the Right Reverend Olukemi Oduntan, said the theme of the Synod was a reminder to the present day Christians to be mindful of habits that could hinder them from attaining eternity.
Bishop Oduntan maintained that those little issues humanity often regarded as unimportant were significant enough to destroy homes, marriages, careers, business and jobs.
The Synod also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to adopt electronic voting system in future elections to check electoral malpractices and violence.
It also urged the Judicial arm of government to remain impartial and to live above board in the discharge of its institutional responsibility, particularly as it relates to the election petitions pending before various courts.
