YEARS AFTER COVID 19 PANDEMIC, NIGERIA YET TO UPGRADE MEDICAL LABS TO WORLD STANDARD —EXPERT CRIES OUT

REPORTER: AMECHI ODO

A medical laboratory scientist in Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ikwo in Ebonyi State, Dr. Casmir Ifeanyi, has called for collaboration between medical laboratory scientists and the Federal Government to institutionalize quality management laboratory audit across the country.

Speaking to journalists in Abakaliki, Dr. Ifeanyi expressed unhappiness that years after COVID 19 pandemic, Nigeria was yet to upgrade the operations of medical laboratories to world standard.

He called for the recalibration of the leadership style of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria.

Dr. Ifeanyi noted that unless those with experiences were enthroned to tackle the challenges facing the sector, the quality of diagnosis would continue to nosedive.

Medical lab scientist, who is the immediate past Publicity Secretary of the Association, urged the Federal Ministry of Health to revisit a directive issued to tertiary health institutions to carryout audit and accreditation of their laboratories, which was not implemented.
