PEACE WALK IN ABIA STATE: Women Demand for Free, Fair and Credible Elections

Women from various Local Government Areas of Abia State have staged a peaceful rally in Umuahia, calling for free, fair and credible elections in the State.

The women who came out in their numbers, held placards with inscriptions, such as; “We don’t want violence, rigging of election”, “We want transparent election in Abia State”, “INEC, let our votes count” among others.

Speaking with newsmen in Umuahia, the leader of the group, Chief Stella Nwaohamuo explained that the rally was to preach against electoral violence, rigging, falsification of election results and other acts capable of undermining the electoral process.

Chief Nwaohamuo called on the people to participate actively in the elections by voting for candidates that would work for the common good of the State.

Another member of the group, Mrs. Florence Ikwegbu noted that peace was crucial for the smooth conduct of the polls and advised youths against being used by desperate politicians to service their personal agenda.

She stressed that the well-being of the State was a collective responsibility and urged the electorate to shun apathy, vote buying among other electoral vices.

Mrs. Ikwegbu appealed to INEC to exhibit high sense of professionalism and ensure that its staff members were not dragged into controversies that could affect the credibility of the elections.
