MIXED REACTIONS TRAIL IMPEACHMENT OF SPEAKER, ANAMBRA STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY

There was confusion at the Anambra State House of Assembly yesterday over the impeachment of the Speaker, Mrs Rita Mmaduagwu.

This followed a motion for impeachment moved by the member representing Aguata II Constituency, Mr Ikem Uzoezie, during plenary at the Assembly chamber in Awka, the State capital.

The motion was seconded by Mr. Onyebuchi Offor who represents Ekwusigo Constituency of the State.

The member representing Ogbaru one constituency, Mr Benson Nwawuru then moved a motion for Ikem Uzozie to be made the Speaker and was seconded by the member representing Nnewi South One, Mr Kingsley Iruba.

The lawmakers had accused Mrs. Mmaduagwu of incompetency, financial impropriety and high-handedness, among other allegations.

The Clerk of the House, Mr Pius Udoh, was against the inauguration of the new speaker.

Mr Udoh stated that the lawmakers did not follow due process.

However the Speaker, Mrs Rita Maduagwu while addressing news men on the development, described the purported impeachment as kangaroo.
According to her, she was not given any notice of impeachment and the opposition did not have two third of the members as required by law to impeach her.
About sixteen members of the House supported the Speaker, Mrs Rita Maduagwu.

The House later sat for the plenary under the Speakership of Mrs Rita Madiagwu .
