MIX REACTIONS TRAIL OHANEZE NDIGBO’S ENDORSEMENT OF ATIKU-OBI TICKET

Some residents of Enugu metropolis have expressed divergent views on the endorsement of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar for next month’s Presidential election by Ohaneze Ndigbo, which is an apex socio-cultural organization in Igbo land.

While some see it as a good development others say it does not represent the opinion of the people of Igbo extraction.

Before now, Ohaneze group had insisted that it did not endorse any political party or candidate for the forthcoming elections.

But rising from its meeting in Enugu Thursday night, the Ime Obi organ of the group adopted the PDP Presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar for February 16, 2019 Presidential election.

The National Chairman Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, who announced the decision said Alhaji Atiku/Obi candidacy, more than any other ticket in the presidential race represented the interest of Ndigbo.

Some of the residents of Enugu said the endorsement represented the opinion of Ndigbo.

But for some others, Ndigbo should be allowed to vote for any candidate of their choice, insisting the Ohaneze Ndigbo had no right to decide for them.

One of them, Mr. Uchenna Okeke, maintained that voting for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar would delay the chances of an Igbo Presidency in the country.

Also reacting to the issue, the PDP Chairman in Enugu State, Mr. Augustine Nnamani said the endorsement was not only healthy for democracy but for the development of the nation.

He maintained that Ohaneze Ndigbo had the interest of Ndigbo at heart by adopting the PDP Presidential candidate; who had been in support of restructuring the country.

Mr. Nnamani commended the apex Igbo socio-cultural group for taking the bold step.
