GOVTS URGED TO ALLOCATE MORE FUNDS TO WASH SECTOR

Government at all levels are urged to allocate more resources to water, sanitation and hygiene, WASH sector and show more commitment towards provision of these services which are basic human rights.

The Enugu State Programme Head, Water Aid Nigeria, Mr. Terkimbi Tom made the call while speaking with Radio Nigeria in Enugu on the occasion of this year’s World Toilet Day”.

While lamenting the high rate of open defecation in the country, where about forty million people defecate in the open which made Nigeria rank highest in the practice in 2018, Mr. Tom called on Enugu State Government to key into Federal Government declaration of state of emergency in the WASH sector.

The State Coordinator  said the Federal Government would today as part of activities to mark the day, launch a campaign tagged “Clean Nigeria, Use the Toilet” to sensitize people to the crisis  on WASH sector and collaborate efforts towards ending open defecation.

The Director Environmental Health, Isiuzo Local Government Area, Mr. Augustine Uzochukwu described the theme of this year’s celebration “Live no One Behind” as apt as it emphasized the need to expand sanitation access and take good care of our environment.

Mr. Uzochukwu encouraged members of the public to see the cleanliness of the environment as a top priority.
