The fire which was reported to have started around 5pm Friday affected offices located at the ground floor of the one storey building housing the offices of the state executive members of the party.
Although the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained eye witness told Radio Nigeria that smoke was noticed from one of the premises before it finally engulfed the offices.
It was not clear if anybody was in the office during the inferno but Radio Nigeria gathered that fire fighters whose headquarters was within a stone’s throw from the Party office arrived at the scene and complemented the efforts of passersby in putting out the fire.
Also, the heavy rainfall experienced in the state capital was said to have assisted in preventing the fire from razing the outer part of the building.
The new Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, Mr. Dasuki Galadanchi, who visited the APC secretariat, said that no life was lost during the incident.
Mr. Galadanchi, while assuring the people of adequate security of lives and property, said investigation had commenced to ascertain the cause of the fire.
The State Chairman of APC, Chief Hilary Ekeh, linked the incident to the local government area congress of the party slated to hold nationwide on Saturday.
He however noted that the fire disaster would not hinder the exercise in the state and called on party faithful to be law abiding.
It would be recalled that hoodlums alleged to be working for some aggrieved politicians in the state had attacked the party’s secretariat during the last Saturday’s ward congress but were later repelled by quick intervention of security agents.
