DEC CALLS FOR RESERVATION OF 50% OF POLITICAL SEATS FOR WOMEN

The Executive Director, Development  Education Centre, DEC, Enugu, Dr Cecilia Asogwa has called for a legislation mandating all political parties in the country to reserve fifty per cent  of political seats for women.

Dr Asogwa made the call at the 35th Annual Convention and programme evaluation of DEC in Enugu.

She explained that the Centre was committed to the socio – economic development of people in rural areas through the empowerment of rural women and called for support from relevant agencies to reach out to more women.

In a remark, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Organization, Mr Emeka Odo, observed that programmes of the Centre were mostly targeted at women since many of them suffered abject poverty, ignorance and social injustice.

Two beneficiaries, Mrs Ujunwa Madu and Mrs Gift Aniogo commended the organisation for turning around their lives.

There were presentations of Certificate and Cash as well as Scholarship awards to beneficiaries of skills acquisition programme.

The event was attended by dignitaries including the Governor of Enugu State, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and a former first Lady of the State, Dr. Dorathy Nwodo.
