BACKGROUND CHECK FOR PUBLIC OFFICE SEEKERS ADVOCATED

Guests on Radio Nigeria Enugu Zonal Programme, “Political Watch” have advocated background check for public office seekers.

One of them, a lecturer with the Enugu State University of Science and Technology ESUT, Doctor Chijioke Agbo, argued that the excesses of some political office holders in the country could be checked when citizens were given opportunity to do background checks and elect those who will lead them.

Doctor Agbo canvassed the introduction of civic education in
schools to enthrone values that promote good conduct, decency and patriotism among the citizens.

Another guest, a former Commissioner in Enugu State, Ozo Igbonekwu Ogazimorah pointed out that the craze for political office and the huge remuneration were the reasons for the disregard for rule of law and values.

Ozo Ogazimorah called on people to condemn evil actions of politicians irrespective of tribe or religion.

Contributing to the programme, a Public Administrator, Mr. Godwin Onwusi faulted the recruitment process into key offices, stressing that people should be scrutinized before being appointed into such public offices.

He called for re-orientation of Nigerians to check the trend.
Callers in the programme noted that greed, erosion of values and poor orientation were major factors that lured most politicians in the country to conduct themselves in a manner not befitting public office holders.
