WIDOWS IN UGBAWKA COMMUNITY SMILE HOME WITH COVID-19 PALLIATIVE PACKAGE

As the stay at home order by the government to contain the spread of Coronavirus pandemic continues, a non-profit organization, Kids Education Awareness Initiative (KEAIN) has distributed palliative packages to some indigent widows in Amafor Ugbawka community, to cushion the effect of the order on the people.

The programme held at Community Primary Schoool, Amagu Amafor Ugbawka in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, was used to enlighten the women on the basic preventive guidelines against contracting the virus.

The Executive Director, of KEAIN, and Senior lecturer, Department of Banking and Finance, University of Nigeria, (UNN), Dr. Obiamaka Egbo, said the gesture corresponded with to the vision of the body to offer assistance to the less privileged persons in the society, especially indigent widows, and children.

Dr. Egbo explained that Amagu community was not the only place they had given palliatives to poorest of the poor as they had done similar thing in Emene.

She appealed to wealthy individuals, financially strong groups and organizations to give a helping hand to the poor to reduce the stress such persons had been thrown into due to the prevailing lockdown.

The Secretary, Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN), Enugu State, Apostle Joseph Ajujungwa, who represented the CAN Chairman, commended the initiative, emphasizing that the gesture was worthy of emulation.

The President General, Amagu Ugbawka Town Union, Chief. Samuel Nnamani and the Traditional Ruler, Igwe Felix Okpala, explained that such gesture was first of its kind to the community since the out break of COVID-19.

The beneficiaries, mainly very poor and aged widows, prayed God to bless the organization for coming to their aid, especially now they had been confined to their homes due to COVID-19 pandemic.

A guest Lecturer, Mr. Chris Uche Okonma, enlightened the people on the preventive measures, including, regular hand washing with soap and running water; use of hand sanitizers, and how to cover their nose and mouth while sneezing.

Palliative packages distributed to the women included, cash, clothings (wrappers), biscuits, vegetable oil, rice, beans, garri and tomatoes.
