TRANSPORT FARE RISES BY 100 PERCENT AS COMMERCIAL TRANSPORT OPERATORS IN ENUGU COMPLY WITH COVID-19 PREVENTIVE MEASURES

Some public transport operators in Enugu metropolis have started complying with the directive given to public transport operators in Enugu State towards containing the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Radio Nigeria observed that drivers of mini buses plying Old Park from Abakpa Nike now carry five passengers; tricycle, two passengers; while sixteen and eighteen seater buses now carry one passenger in the front and two in each seat at the back. The passengers are however left to bear the expense as those paying seventy naira before now for the trip, currently pay one hundred and fifty naira.

Transport fare for the mini buses is now two hundred as against one hundred naira. However, transporters plying Agbani-Road to New Market axis are yet to comply with the directive.

The Enugu State Ministry of Transport had on Thursday March 26, 2020 said it would commence enforcement of the directive given to public transport operators in Enugu State towards protecting the people from COVID-19.

The directive as agreed in a meeting with stakeholders in the transport sector include; Motorcycle operators to carry not more than one passenger and all tricycle operators to carry only two passengers at a time.

Other directives are; that all transport operators should have at their entrances, hand washing equipment with soaps and running water, all taxis to carry only one passenger in front and two at the back while all eighteen seater buses should admit only ten passengers till further notice.
