As the 2020 World Breastfeeding Week gradually comes to an end, Radio Nigeria examines the importance of the event and the views of some parents on the practice. On August 1, 2020, Nigeria joined the global community with activities to mark the 2020 World Breastfeeding Week.

It is a weeklong international campaign aimed at raising awareness and galvanizing action on themes related to breastfeeding. The event started in 1992 and in 2016, it was aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while in 2018, a World Health Assembly Resolution endorsed the week as an important breastfeeding promotion strategy.

In an interview with Radio Nigeria, the Chief-in-Charge of an Infant Welfare Clinic in Umuahia metropolis, Mrs.  Onyinyechi Ehiuwa, commended the United Nations and the World Health Organization for designating a whole week to raise awareness on the importance of breastfeeding to the health and overall development of infants.

Mrs. Ehiuwa described the theme of this year’s event which is ”Support breastfeeding for a healthier planet,” as apt, noting that nursing mothers needed the active support of their husbands to feed very well, which would enable them to effectively breastfeed their children.

In an interview, some parents, Mr. Kingsley Izuogu, Mrs. Goodness Chinagorom and Mrs. Vivian Onyebuchi, said breastfeeding had played a key role in the wellbeing of their babies and had enhanced their bonding. The 2020 Breastfeeding Week ends on Friday August 7.
