SOUTH EAST GOVS. URGED TO DIVERSIFY THEIR REVENUE BASE FOR PAYMENT OF ₦30,000 MINIMUM WAGE

Labour leaders in the South East Zone have called on the State Governors to reduce the cost of governance and increase their inward revenue base to avoid hitches in the payment of thirty thousand naira minimum wage.

They made the call while contributing to Political Watch, a Radio Nigeria Enugu Zonal Live interactive political programme.

One of them, the Legal Adviser, Nigeria Labour Congress, Enugu State Council, Comrade Simon Obadife Egwu urged the State Governors to develop the political will to pay salaries in order to reduce the plight of workers in the country.

He advised them to merge some ministries and also reduce the number of appointments to save money for the payment while efforts should be made to reduce ghost worker syndrome in the system.

Also, a factional Chairman, NLC, Ebonyi State, Comrade Ikechukwu Nwafor regretted that no State in the South East was paying the eighteen thousand naira minimum wage and expressed fear on the possibility of the new one.

He advised the Government to subsidize cost of education, health and provide housing and stable electricity to enable the workers have value for their money.

Another guest, the Director of Labour, Enugu State Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Mr. Onyibani Ani reiterated the readiness of Enugu State Government to pay the new minimum wage and asked the Federal Government to make available the payment chat.

Callers in the programme commended President Mohammadu Buhari for approving the thirty thousand naira minimum wage but appealed that there should be no disparity in the payment.
