SHIITE-SECURITY AGENCIES FACE OFF: ANGLICAN CLERICS CALL FOR CAUTION AS BISHOP ONAGA WANTS PAYMENT OF MINIMUM WAGE

The Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, the Most Revered Emmanuel Chukwuma has advised the Federal Government to be cautious with its handling of the protest by the movement of the Islamic sect, Shiite in Abuja with a view to addressing their demand amicably.

Archbishop Chukwuma spoke in Enugu over the recent clashes between the group and security agencies which had resulted in the death of some people.

ArchBishop Chukwuma called for urgent solution to the problem to avoid further killings of innocent Nigerians.

“I am very much disturbed about what is happening in Abuja concerning the Shiites; also, I am calling on religious and northern leaders to call the people to order and if possible, call the Federal Government to see how they can reconcile and stop this killings, because it’s going to affect the security of Nigeria and confidence of Nigerians in the coming election.

“We totally condemn this killings and saying that it is not right that lives should be wasted. Government should find a way to please stop the killings, there should be a way of resolving it,” Chukwuma advised.

The cleric also condemned the killings in Kaduna, Jos, Benue and some other parts of northern Nigeria.

The Most Emmanuel Chukwuma bemoaned the poor state of Federal roads across the southeast zone and calling for urgent government intervention.

He said the Yuletide was fast approaching noting that if nothing was done on the roads urgently to fix them, it would be impossible for those coming for the celebration to go home safely.

“Infrastructure in the southeast zone is nothing to write home about, I travel on the road always to Umuahia, Anambra, Owerri and Portharcourt, the roads are nothing to write home about. I wonder where the money budgeted for the road is going?

Meanwhile, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, the Most Revered Callistus Onaga has advised the Federal Government to take necessary steps to avert the planned nationwide indefinite strike by the organised labour in the country over minimum wage.

The Most Revered Onaga appealed to the government to look into the demand of the labour unions with a view to resolving it amicably.

He maintained that with the ugly economic situation being experienced in the country, salaries earned by workers could hardly take care of their family needs.

While condemning none implementation of policies that would impart lives of Nigerians positively, the cleric advocated improvement on infrastructure in the southeast zone.

Bishop Onaga advised Nigerians to remain steadfast in prayers and trust in God for solutions to the numerous challenges confronting the nation.
