REMEDIAL WORK COMMENCES ON FLOODED OGIDI SECTION OF ENUGU-ONITSHA ROAD

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has commissioned the reconstruction of the Ogidi section of Awka-Onitsha Old Road, affected by flood.

Performing the ceremony at Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area, Governor Soludo said that his administration would continue to engage the Federal Government in the bid to find a lasting solution to the flood in various parts of the state on long-term basis.

Governor Soludo while noting that the Awka- Ogidi -Onitsha road is a federal road,
emphasized that most federal roads in the state are in deteriorating condition.

The Governor observed that his administration had intervened many times in fixing some of the federal roads in the state in the midst of scarce resources at its disposal.

Professor Soludo further explained that short term intervention would be deployed in as much as his government had called on the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) and the Federal Government to come to its aid.

The Governor also hinted that his government would embark on aggressive road construction as soon as the rain subsided.

Professor Soludo while expressing his administration’s determination to rid the state of criminal elements, called on residents of Ogidi and its environs to join hands in in building a liveable and prosperous homeland.

Earlier, the traditional ruler of Ogidi, Igwe Alexzandra Uzo-Onyido, had explained the importance of the road to the people of the state.

He noted that due to the low topography of the area, flood from nine neigbourring communities discharged in the area, thereby causing artificial rivers and lake.

The President General of Ogidi community, Chief Chuka Onubugo, noted that the perennial flood in the area had submerged many houses, thereby displacing many inhabitants.

Also, the member representing Idemili North in the State House of Assembly, Mr. Ifeanyi Chiekwu, expressed happiness with the commencement of the project, describing the road as night mare

The State Commissioner for Works, Mr. ifeanyichukwu Okoma, said that the ravage caused by flood had become a source of worry to the people, pointing out that it had been neglected by past administrations.

Some residents, who witnessed the event, expressed delight that the reconstruction of the drainage would no doubt ameliorate the untold hardship they often went through whenever it rained.
