Reporter : UZOMA NWANKWO

An Environmental Heath Officer in Abia State, Mr. Uchenna Osondu, says dangers inherent in open defecation call for committed efforts to end the practice.

Mr. Osondu, who made this known while interacting with Radio Nigeria in Umuahia, noted that the practice could lead to the spread of infectious diseases, especially in the rural areas.

He said open defecation was one of the major causes of water pollution, which often resulted in water borne diseases and called on the people to shun the act and put necessary facilities in their homes to make the society safe.

Mr. Osondu explained that government had ensured that environmental health officers go to various communities to inspect toilet facilities but pointed out that more needed to be done to change the  attitude of people on open defecation.

The Environmental Health Officer also called on the government to put in place mechanism to ensure that residents were provided with running water to improve the sanitary conditions of the people, especially now that coronavirus pandemic was ravaging the World.
