NYSC TASKS EMPLOYERS ON SAFETY & WELFARE OF CORPS MEMBERS IN EBONYI

REPORTER: CHINAZO ILECHUKWU

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has called for an urgent solution to the rapid decline in the welfare and security of corps members as the situation impedes their productivity.

The Director, NYSC South East Area Office, Mrs. Dorothy Nwatalari, made the call in a message to a one day Workshop for corps employers in Abakaliki.

Represented by the Deputy Director Operations, Mr. Philip Eneberue, the Director NYSC South East Area Office, Mrs. Dorothy Nwatalari mentioned lack of accommodation, no transit hostel, rejection and none payment of stipend as some the challenges facing corp members deployed to various states to render service to their fatherland.

She noted that the workshop was to enable NYSC management and corps employers to brainstorm and come up with solutions to the challenges.

The State Coordinator of the Scheme, Mrs. Bamai Mercy, explained that apart from acting as a potent instrument for national unity, NYSC had also enhanced the mobility of labour across the nation and must be accorded the necessary support.

Two of the corps employers, Mr. Ifeanyi Godwin and Mrs. Cordelia Elom, appreciated the sacrifice of the corps members, emphasising that they had been doing their best to assist them within the limits of their resources.

The Chairman NYSC Ebonyi State Governing Board, who is also the state Commissioner for Sports, Mr. Charles Akpuenika, represented at the event by the Director of Youths in the Ministry, Mr. Lawrence Orji, had while declaring the event open, commended corps members for their sacrifice to develop the country.

The theme for the event was achieving improved productivity of corps members through enhanced welfare and security during the service year.
