NWC OF NUJ URGED TO INTERVENE ON CRISIS ROCKING THE COUNCIL IN THE SOUTHEAST

Some members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ in the South East have called on the National Working Committee of the Union to set up panel of inquiry to investigate crisis rocking various councils in the zone.

They made the call while briefing newsmen at the end of an expanded meeting of the members in Enugu.

One of them, Comrade Sabastine Okafor, condemned the plan by the national body of the union to conduct election in Enugu CouncilĀ  on Wednesday the 20th of February, 2019 without addressing some contentious issues raised by majority of the members.

Comrade Okafor who is the Chairman of the Elders Forum of the NUJ in the South East, said journalists were critical stakeholders in Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections, noting that the purported NUJ election was wrongly scheduled.

Also speaking, the Chairman, Aba Federated Chapel of NUJ, Abia State Comrade Eric Ugbo, and a member of Anambra Council of NUJ, Comrade Nweke Nweke alleged that the National President of the union, Comrade Chris Isiguzo was undemocratic in handling issues in the zone.

Another member of the Union from Ebonyi State Council, Comrade Ben Agwu said that there were constant certification allegation against some major officers of the union which needed to be investigated and called on security and relevant agencies to intervene.

The aggrieved members had earlier last two weeks staged a peaceful protest and approached an Enugu Industrial Court to seek Justice on the matter.
