NIGERIA WILL END OPEN DEFECATION BY 2025 — MINISTER

The Federal Government has restated its committment to end open defecation by 2025.

Minister of Water Resources, Mr. Suleiman Adamu, stated this in a message to the inauguration of national youth volunteer programme tagged, “Handwashing and Clean Nigeria Campaign,” held in Enugu, Enugu State.

The Minister, represented by Chief Sanitation Officer in the Ministry, Mrs. Ayaba Kobara, expressed regret that the country now occupies the infamous number one spot in the list of countries still practising open defecation.

Speaking on the occassion, the Manager, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), UNICEF, Enugu Field Office, Mrs. Mamita Bora-Tharka, encouraged youths to be in the vanguard of ending open defecation and promoting hygiene practices, such as hand washing with soap, to check diseases, including COVID-19.

In a message to the occassion, the Enugu State Governor, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi encouraged people to embrace hygiene as transmission of diseases occurred mostly through unhygienic practices and dirty environment.

The Governor restated his administration’s commitment to end open defecation in the state.

The youth volunteers drawn from the Local Government Areas of the state pledged to carry the message of hygiene and healthy living to the people, especially those at the grassroots.
