NDLEA SEEKS COLLABORATIVE SUPPORT TO FIGHT DRUG ABUSE IN ABIA

REPORTER: JOHN MADUAGWU

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA) wants all relevant stakeholders in Abia State to intensify efforts in combating the menace of drug abuse among youths in the area.

The Commander of NDLEA in Abia State, Mr. Wilfred Nnadi, made the call in an interview with Radio Nigeria.

Mr. Nnadi expressed worry about the global rise in drug abuse, including Abia State, and identified some of the substances commonly abused in the area.

They include methamphetamine, (popularly called Mkpuru Mmiri), heroin, cocaine, tramadol, codeine-based syrups, rephnol and different species of cannabis such as the ones popularly known as Kolos, Arizona and Loud.

He lamented that the abuse of these substances had led to the damage of vital body organs, especially lungs, kidney, and liver.

They have resulted in mental health issues, noting that the social impact could lead to broken homes as well as impact on their academics.

Mr. Nnadi said the command was embarking on massive sensitization to enlighten people about the dangers of drug abuse as well as counselling and rehabilitation.

He said enforcement operations would be stepped up to apprehend dealers and cut off supply to users.

The NDLEA boss appealed for more support from the Abia State Government and other relevant stakeholders to boost the fight against drug dealing and abuse in the area.
