IPC PARTNERS THE MEDIA ON CREDIBLE GUBER POLL IN IMO

REPORTER: UGONNA AGU

Media professionals in Imo State have been called to bring professionalism to bear in the reportage of the November 11 governorship election in the state to ensure peaceful and credible elections.

The International press center (IPC) made the call during a media roundtable engagement with Journalists on the upcoming Imo Governorship election.

The IPC said the event was organized for media practitioners to brainstorm and exchange ideas on how to effectively play the role expected of the media in the electoral and democratic process.

Speaking on behalf of the Executive Director IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, the Programmes Director, Ms Melody Akinjiyan, said the program was to critically examine the interconnections among the public, the media and elections towards developing an agenda that would strengthen the role of the media in facilitating a credible electoral process.

Miss Akinjiyan noted that the “IPC believes that the media has a critical agenda setting role to support the integrity and credibility of elections, and must take a lead role in ensuring that citizens are adequately mobilized.”

She therefore advised the participants to not only focus on the campaigns of the gubernatorial gladiators, but also provide appropriate education for the voters, enlighten them on campaign issues, the candidates and their programmes as well as the voting processes.
