INCREASING POPULATION WITHOUT SOCIO-ECONOMIC GROWTH IS DANGEROUS — DEVELOPMENT EXPERT
REPORTER: NDU NWANNAH
A community health development expert, Comrade Charles Nworah, has called for adequate sensitization of citizens to the dangers of increasing population without socio-economic growth.
Comrade Nworah stated this while speaking with Radio Nigeria on this year’s World Population Day celebration in Awka.
Comrade Nworah noted that a population increase without adequate provision of social welfare and amenities would be counter- productive.
He also urged citizens to embrace family planning and child spacing methods to guard against overburdening the government, which was grappling with poor economic situations.
Recall that the Governing Council of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) established World Population Day in 1989, as inspired by the Day of the 5 billion, which was observed on July 11, 1987.
Following a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the first event was celebrated on July 11, 1990.
The event focuses on creating awareness and educating the global community about challenges posed by increasing population.
The theme of the 2023 World Population Day is, “Unleashing the power of Gender Equality: Uplifting the Voices of Women and Girls to Unlock our World’s Infinite Possibilities.”
