REPORTER: CHINAZO ILECHUKWU

The need for media professionals to pay more attention to the females and issues affecting them has again come to the front burner in the media circle.

Speaking at a workshop organized for media professionals in Owerri, an Associate Professor of Mass Communication with the Imo State University, Dr. Nkem Fab-Ukozor, expressed regret that women were often left as news sources, hence the need to re-awaken the consciousness of Journalists.

She said recent findings of a review by Global Media Monitoring Project revealed that Nigeria was lowly rated in women inclusiveness in news from select media as only fourteen percent of the media contents focused on women while eighty-six percent centered on men.

Dr. Fab-Ukozor, who is the Executive Director of a nongovernmental organization, “Media and Gender Enlightenment Initiative” MEGEIN noted that the media were strategic in realizing the goal five of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which sought to achieve gender equality.

A media Scholar, Dr. Kingsley Nworgu, called on journalists to be gender sensitive and avoid using phrases that demean the female gender in their reportage.

He expressed worry that women were not sufficiently featured in interviews or vox pop by broadcast journalists thereby preventing the voices of women from being heard by those who formulate policies.
