HOODLUM ATTACK MILITARY CHECKPOINT ON ONITSHA-OWERRI ROAD

The Police Command in Anambra State has confirmed an attack on security checkpoint on Ihiala-Owerri Road.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, caused tension and panic among residents and motorists in the area.

According to an eye witness account, yet to be identified hoodlums attacked a military checkpoint on the ihiala axis of the Onitsha-Owerri highway and allegedly killed three officers on duty.

Confirming the incident in a telephone interview, the Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra State, Mr. Tochi Ikenga, said the yet to be identified persons attacked a military formation in the area but that the command was yet to get the full details of the incident.

He said upon receiving the information, the Area Commander in charge of Ihiala led other security agents to ensure normalcy in the area.

Mr. Ikenga enjoined road users and residents to go about their lawful duties as the command awaited proper situation report on the incident from the military.

Radio Nigeria gathered that the incident also caused heavy human and vehicular traffic within the Bridge Head axis of Onitsha due to security personnel who were on ground to ensure safety.

Meanwhile normalcy has since returned to the route with the usual flow of traffic.
