The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the murder of the former aide to an APC Chieftain and ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Ahmed Gulak.

A statement from the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Bala Elkana, said the deceased was attacked by bandits on his way to the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport to catch a flight.

According to the statement, Mr. Gulak left his hotel room, alongside two other persons, in a cab and headed for the airport without informing security agents, considering the fragile security situation in the south east.

The statement explained that the deceased, who was without security escort, was intercepted around 7:00am on Sunday by six gunmen operating in a sienna bus who identified and shot him at Umueze Obiangwu in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State.

The statement added that the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, Mr. Abutu Yaro, had directed a discreet investigation into the matter as tactical and Special Forces had been deployed to cordon the area and arrest perpetrators.

Late Ahmed Gulak was said to have visited Imo State on an invitation by some northern groups in the state but met his sudden death a few meters away from the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport.

The incident has heightened tension in the already charged atmosphere as the state has come under more attacks by unknown gunmen in the last three days.
