GRIDLOCK AT ENUGU TUNNEL AS LORRY RAMS INTO A MINI TRUCK

REPORTER: CHUKWUBUIKE MADU

A Mercedes 911 lorry loaded with palm kernel Tuesday afternoon crashed into a delivery mini truck at the Ebeano Tunnel, close to the Old Artisan Market, Enugu.

The lorry, with registration number: Anambra XE 189—JJT, also hit a Wrangler Jeep, breaking its rear light and part of the bumper.

When Radio Nigeria visited the scene the lorry driver was busy making peace with the owner of the Wrangler Jeep.

The driver of the mini truck, who did not disclose his name, blamed the accident on break failure.

He told Radio Nigeria that he was held up in traffic, waiting for the traffic light to pass them when the lorry suddenly hit his vehicle from the back and it fell sideways, damaging the truck badly.

“I was waiting for the traffic light when this lorry came from nowhere and hit my vehicle and my truck fell sideways but I came out unhurt.

“When I asked the 911 driver what happened, he said he had break failure and instead of climbing the median of the road, he decided to use my truck to wedge himself because his truck would have fallen if he had climbed the median and that would have been more disastrous,” the truck driver narrated.

Meanwhile nobody died or was injured in the incident, but the situation caused serious gridlock in the tunnel, frustrating my road users.

As at the time of filling this report, officials of the Enugu State Ministry of Transport (MOT) were making efforts to remove the vehicles off the road to ease vehicular movement.
