GOVT REACTS TO NNEWI BUILDING COLLAPSE

REPORTER: UCHE NDEKE

The Anambra State Government has accused the developer of the building that collapsed in Nnewi of refusing to stop work and obtain necessary approvals from relevant agencies.

The Managing Director, Anambra State Physical Planning Board, Dr. Chike Mmaduekwe, made the accusation while speaking with Radio Nigeria in Awka.

The storey building and a pent house under construction, collapsed at about one o’clock on Sunday morning at Egbu Umuenem Village, Otolo Nnewi in Nnewi North Local Government Area leaving the site engineer and his two sons dead.

Dr. Mmaduekwe, while sympathizing with the family of the bereaved, called on developers to strive to follow building guidelines, including using COREN certified engineers and quality materials in executing their projects.

He noted with regret that the situation was part of the challenges the present administration was preaching against.

He cautioned people against doing things their own way, irrespective of what the law said.

According to Dr. Mmaduekwe, the personnel of the board had visited the construction site and notified them on the need to go for approval but the professional warnings fell on deaf ears as they continued with the project without going for the necceassry certifications.

An eye witness narrated that the two children of the site engineer visited him when it started raining and they could not go back home.

The one storey building with a pent house later collapsed at about one o’clock Sunday morning, killing the man and the two children.

Dr. Mmaduekwe said government had ordered for the immediate seal of the property, noting that the owner of the structure woukd also face necceassry charges bordering on manslaughter and forfeiture of the land for failing to do the needful, an offence punishable by the law.
