Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State says the proposed dredging of Oguta Lake and Orashi River will open up economic activities, create more jobs and boost commerce and trade in the state.

Governor Uzodimma made this known in Oguta Local Government Area during a meeting with the Nigeria Navy on the need to create enabling environment for the Navy to patrol the water ways for the security of lives and property.

According to the Governor, the state government found it imperative to propose to the Federal Government the need to pursue her gas industrialization policy on the Oguta Lake and Orashi River axis.

Governor Uzodinma said when realized, the project would aid in managing the security situation, eliminate crude oil theft and pipe line vandalism as well as clear hindrances along Oguta Lake and Orashi River to aid bigger vasesels to come in.

Earlier, the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Awwal Gambo, visited Governor Uzodinma at the Government House Owerri to communicate with him the President’s approval for the expansion of Oguta Lake axis.

Rear Admiral Awwal Gambo, who was represented by Rear Admiral Siliranda Lassa, noted that the established Naval Base at Oguta would curb insecurity in the area.

Admiral Siliranda explained that so many natural resources are deposited in the area, and when harnessed, Imo State would be a leading gas producer in the country.

He said the Navy would carry out survey of the area, noting that the geographic department of the Navy had started dredging for expansion of River Niger from Lokoja up to Burutu.
