GOV. UMAHI LAMENTS EMERGENCE OF ELECTION RACKETEERS IN EBONYI AS POLICE ARREST SOME SUSPECTS

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has raised alarm over the activities of suspected election racketeers, who go about collecting permanent voters card from unsuspecting residents of the state.

Chief Umahi raised the alarm while receiving members of National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Ebonyi State Chapter, who paid him a courtesy visit at Government House Abakaliki.

He described as worrisome a situation where suspected election racketeers float phantom agricultural empowerment programmes just to deceive people into submitting their Permanent Voter’s Card to them.

The Governor alleged that one of such racketeers was arrested in his home town Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state and urged members of the National Council of Women Societies to embark on voter education to check the ugly trend.

“We are going to have a security meeting in this regard; it is very dangerous where people go to collect peoples PVCs, they have mortgaged them for life because it means that even in the next election they are not going to vote.”

According to Governor Umahi, his administration will continue to ensure that women are equitably represented in the political governance of the state and announced the provision of office accommodation for the group.

The State President National Council of Women Societies, Mrs. Tessy Umoke, pointed out that the group embarked on the visit to commend Governor Umahi for his numerous achievements especially, in the areas of infrastructural development.

She observed that the Chief Umahi-led administration had surpassed the 35% affirmative action in the provision of political appointment to women and urged the Governor to sustain the record.

Mrs. Umoke said “additional accolade needs to be poured on you for advancing the frontiers of gender balance and widening the opportunities for women participation in political space.”

Mrs. Umoke assured the Governor that the group was not only ready to campaign against illegal collection of people’s PVCs but also carry out voter education to reduce number of invalid votes in 2019 Election.
