Anambra State Government has condemned in strong terms the killing of some people by unknown assailants at Awkuzu on Monday.

Governor Willie Obiano, who made the condemnation in a statewide broadcast at Aguleri, Anambra East Council Area, commiserated with the affected families.

According to Governor Obiano, the curfew, which was imposed on Awkuzu, Igbariam, Nteje, Umunya, Umuleri and Aguleri communities, was a means of curtailing the security challenges in those areas in particular and the state at large.

Governor Obiano appealed to the people of the state to be calm and go about their lawful businesses without fear and assured them that those behind the act would be brought to book.

“The government of Anambra State condemns this act and has ordered the security commanders to bring the criminals who are behind these regrettable incident to justice.

“In pursuit of this, I have ordered that immediate curfew be placed between the hours of 7pm and 6am daily in Igbariam, Aguleri, Umueri, Awkuzu, Nteje and Umunya communities as a means of containing the security challenges in the affected area,” the Governor said.

The Governor, who expressed appreciation to the people for their continued support, urged those in the affected communities to comply with the new directive, assuring them that the challenges would be surmounted.

There was a clash in the early morning of Monday, April 26, 2021 between some people in Uzo-Nkwo, Awkuzu, in Oyi Local Government Area, and some non-indigenes, where some people were killed and some others maimed, as such both sides recorded casualties.

Top government functionaries and security chiefs were present during the broadcast.
