GOV NWIFURU LAMENTS SHODDY JOB ON ABAKALIKI-AFIKPO ROAD, DEMANDS INVESTIGATION OF N2.6 BILLON PAYMENT

REPORTER: AMECHI ODO

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has called on the Federal Government to investigate the payment of N2.6 billion to a contractor who allegedly did a shoddy job on a section of the Abakaliki-Afikpo road.

He made the call while receiving the Minister of Works, Chief David Umahi, at Government House Abakaliki.

Governor Nwifuru said it was unfortunate that Ebonyi State was left out in the allocation of road projects in recent years and urged the Federal Government to correct the imbalance and also facilitate the repayment of funds used in the construction of some federal roads by the state government.

He decried the poor quality of job being done on Osso-Owutu Federal Road, emphasizing that 2.6 Billion Naira paid to a contractor who was awarded the Abakaliki-Afikpo Highway was wrong and should be investigated.

The Minister of Works, Chief Umahi said he was in the state as part of his tour of roads in the South East, pointing out that Ebonyi State had the least number of roads in the zone.

He noted that the Federal Government needed about ten trillion Naira to offset debts owed road contractors but assured the people of the state that the Federal Government would nonetheless undertake some projects.

Chief Umahi said though the Federal Government had no money to refund state governments for intervening in Federal roads, the Ministry had initiated Highway Development Management Initiative to create room for public private partnership in road construction.
