GOV IKPEAZU SIGNS ABIA STATE WATER BILL INTO LAW

The Abia State Water Bill 2021, has been signed into law by
Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.

Performing the ceremony at Government House Umuahia, Governor Ikpeazu explained that the Water law was aimed at ensuring mandatory and adequate provision of potable for the citizenry, considering the critical importance of water in day to day life activities.

He noted that the law also assigned certain responsibilities to the people and offered the state government the needed legal platform to handle issues relating to water, calling on development agencies not to relent in their support to the State government.

Chairman, Steering Committee on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Mr. Chris Ezem, in a remark noted that the Law was vital in achieving rapid repositioning of the water sector, especially the resuscitation of water schemes in Ubakala and Ariaria and lauded the support of development partners, including USAID E-WASH.

Also, the Acting Permanent Secretary, Ministry pof Public Utilities, Mr. Friday Chika, said the law would reduce water borne health issues and commended the State government for the giant strides in providing the people with potable water..

The Governor also launched the Abia State Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Policy WASH.
