On the occasion of the 2023 International Day of Education, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) wants the Federal Government to deliver on the commitments made by President Muhammadu Buhari at the UN Secretary General’s Transforming Education Summit, held in September, 2022 to end the global learning crisis.

UNICEF Education Specialist, Dr. Agatha Nzeribe, in a statement on behalf of the UNICEF Chief of Enugu Field Office, Mrs. Juliet Chiluwe and UNICEF Nigeria Representative Ms Christian Munduate, noted that in Nigeria 75% of children “between 7 and 14 years cannot read a simple sentence or solve a basic math problem.”

Dr. Nzeribe restated UNICEF’s commiment in supporting Government of Nigeria to transform it’s education sector and to prevent the loss of hard fought gains in getting children into school, particularly “poor, rural children and girls, ensuring that they remain in school, complete their education and achieve to their potential.”

UNICEF equally urged the Federal Government to increase domestic spending on education to meet the 20% global benchmark by 2030 and to address the infrastructure and teaching backlog that are affecting all children’s access to inclusive and quality education.
