EXPERT INSISTS ON ENVIRONMENTAL CLEANLINESS TO CURB INFECTIONS DISEASES

REPORTER: UZOMA NWANKWO

An environmentalist, Mr. Obi Udeagha, has reiterated cleanliness as one of the best ways of preventing and controlling the increasing cases of infectious diseases in Nigeria.

Mr. Udeagha, who is the Head of Department, Environmental Health, Umuahia South Health Authority, Abia State, made this known during sensitization at Apumiri Market, Ubakala in Umuahia South Local Government Area.

Mr. Udeagha noted that the sensitization became necessary following the ways residents abused the environment, especially at work places, markets and residential areas and called for attitudinal change to enhance hygiene and healthy living.

The environmental health expert cautioned residents against indiscriminate refuse disposal, indiscriminate urination, open defecation and advised the traders to stop blocking the drainage with refuse to ensure free flow of water.

In an interview, some of the traders in the market, including Mr. Friday Ahiaraumunna, said they had been reminded of the importance of keeping their environment clean, especially now that the cases of Monkey Pox and Lassa Fever were on the increase.

Radio Nigeria observed that during the programme, the team of the environmental health officers shared handbills containing environmental health tips to the people.
