ENUGU STATE POLICE COMMAND THREATENS TO SANCTION ERRING OFFICERS AND MEN ENFORCING STAY AT HOME ORDER

The Police Command Enugu State says it will severely sanction any policeman found to be uncivil, brutal, extorting people and involved in other acts of official misconduct in the course of enforcing the state government’s restriction order.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ahman Abdurrahman, who gave the warning in Enugu, directed all officers in the Command to exhibit high sense of professionalism and avoid arbitrary use of discretional powers while enforcing the restriction order.

In a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Daniel Ndukwe Ekea, the Commissioner also warned Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and heads of Tactical and Operational Departments to take charge of officers and men under their supervision or be held responsible for lapses in their actions.

“The CP has warned all Officers in the Command to always exhibit a high sense of professionalism and avoid the arbitrary use of their discretional powers while enforcing the orders. He noted that henceforth, any report of incivility, brutality, extortion and other acts of official misconduct against any erring Officer, will attract severe sanctions.

“To this end, the Commissioner of Police has warned and directed all Area Commanders, DPOs and Heads of Tactical/Operational Departments of the Command to ensure maximum control and supervision of Officers and Men under them, as they will be held vicariously liable for any lapses recorded in their areas of responsibility,” the statement indicated.

The statement while, while acknowledging the hardship and other challenges occasioned by the restriction order, urged people to obey the restriction order as it remained one of the best ways of containing the spread of COVID-19.

It further encouraged people to avoid falling prey to criminal elements who would use the social media and internet to defraud unsuspecting citizens of their hard earned money under the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Commissioner, while acknowledging the adverse socio-economic impact of the restriction orders on mankind globally, has entreated citizens of the State to remain law-abiding and compliant with the restriction orders, as it has been adjudged one of the best ways of staying safe, healthy and to avoid infecting or being infected with the deadly Virus.

“He further implored them to remain vigilante and avoid falling prey to criminals, especially fraudsters who are using the internet and social media platforms to defraud unsuspecting citizens of their hard-earned monies and other valuables in these trying times of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Accordingly, the good citizens of the State have been called upon to promptly report suspected criminals and acts of criminality to the nearest Police Station or by calling the Command’s emergency hotlines on 08032003702, 08075390883, 08086671202 or 08098880172,” the statement ended.
