ENUGU STATE GOVT DEMOLISHES ORIE EMENE MARKET FOR AIR SAFETY
The Enugu State Government has carried out its threat of the immediate closure of Orie Emene Market, including the abattoir to forestall tragic air accident at the Airport.
The State Government on Saturday demolished the market amidst tight security and cries by the affected traders and shop owners.
This followed safety concerns raised by Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN on potential air hazards in and around the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
The State Commissioner for information, Mr. Ogbuagu Anikwe, had earlier while briefing journalists after Executive Council meeting held at Government House Enugu, said that the near tragic air mishap that occurred on May 6, 2019 was one of reasons behind the decision.
The Chairman Enugu East Local Government Area was also directed to take immediate action for the closure of the market.
The Executive Council also ordered immediate removal of all illegal structures encroaching on the land of the Airport, including the mast of the State Broadcasting Service (ESBS).
According to the Commissioner, the State Executive Council had in October 2018 approved funds for relocation of the mast of the State Broadcasting Service on the approach of the Run Way to Okpatu Hill, Ugwu Rerenkwu in Udi Local Government Area.
But he pointed out that implementation of the project was hampered by the disruptive activities of some youths in the community.
The Information Commissioner said that Enugu State Government had directed immediate cessation of all hostilities against the project, warning any further interference would attract the full wrath of the Law given that Government had paid all the necessary compensation.
The Traditional Rulers of Okaptu Communities and Town Union Leadership were called upon to ensure full compliance with the directive.
