EBSUBEB SUSPENDS TEACHER, THREATENS SANCTIONS AGAINST UNSERIOUS TEACHERS

Ebonyi State Government has threatened to sanction any teacher, Head Teacher or principal who fails in the discharge of their duties to serve as a deterrent to others.

The Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Chief Hyercinth Ikpo, made this known during an on the spot assessment tour of some schools across the state to ascertain the level of activities in the second week of resumption of the 2022/2023 first term academic session in the area.

Some of the schools visited by Chief Hyacinth Ikpo and his entourage were Ndukwe Community Primary School Amasiri, Inohia Itim-Ukwu Secondary school, Amasiri Secondary school and Comprehensive Secondary school, all in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

On arrival at Comprehensive Secondary Afikpo, it was discovered that of the nine teachers, two, including the Principal, Mrs. Nnenna Chukwu, were not on duty while Mr. Michael Egwu-Idam, who was reported to be unserious with his work, was suspended and his salary withheld till further notice to serve as a lesson to others.

While interacting with the Head Teacher of Ndukwe Community Primary School, Mrs. Obi Okenyim, the team discovered an encroachment into the school premises.

“The former Local Government Chairman came into the land to erect her personal building of which I reported and at the end of the issue I was transferred out of the school demoted. We are three that suffered this and I’m the only person that is yet back,” Mr. Ndukwe cried out.

In his reaction, Chief Ikpo promised to pay arrears of salaries owed some teachers connected to the situation and threatened that government would not hesitate to take over any property cited on the School property.

The Principal of Comprehensive Secondary School Amasiri, Mr. Enya Oko-Obini, and his Inohia Itim Secondary School counterpart, Elder Orji-Orji Egwu, complained of lack of teachers, social amenities and other necessary facilities that enhance conducive environment for adequate teaching and learning in their schools.

Others applauded Ebonyi State Government for prompt payment of salaries and other wages to deserving workers in the state.
